Reviewing 'Start With Why' by Simon Sinek

Synopsis:

Start With Why by Simon Sinek is a motivational book that delves into the purposes people start businesses, set goals and build empires and how that reason links them to their customers and success. It highlights the role of leadership and talks of how continuously asking the question of "why" has been inspiring for all the people who made it.

Why You Should Read It:

This book is suitable for leaders since it explains how the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way. Leaders all started with WHY. We can also learn from the real-life examples given in the book. Some of which include:

  1. The launch of the first Apple Ipod. Creative told us a “5GB MP3 player whereas Apple said “1,000 songs in your pocket”. Creative told us WHAT it is whereas Apple told us WHY we need it.

  2. Had a company in the late 1800s that made trains and railroads defined themselves by WHY they did it; to transport mass amounts of people, maybe they would have led the development of the airplane and be a major airline today rather than continuing to make trains and ignore the development of aircrafts and die out.

Our Favorite Quotes:

  • “The role of a leader is not to come up with all the great ideas. The role of a leader is to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.”

This quote illustrates how a leader is created and the qualities of leadership in any situation. People can learn from the book to step up and all be leaders of the society.

  • “When you compete against everyone else, no one wants to help you. But when you compete against yourself, everyone wants to help you.”

There is a big difference between those two; competing against one's own past self and others. Considering yourself to be competition can get you the support of others and furthermore help you grow more as an individual.

  • “...two ways to influence human behavior: you can manipulate it or you can inspire it.”

The quote sums up the entire book by giving you two simple choices. It is the readers’ duty to choose which path they will take after finishing the book.

Reviews:

  • What’s good about Sinek’s book is that it ties in the entire value chain of relationship between customer, workers, and decision makers. The purpose becomes then really a connector for everything, provided it is perceived as authentic.

- Sergio Caredda, Digital Knowmad

  • Start With Why is one of the most useful and powerful books I've read in years. Simple and elegant, it shows us how leaders should lead.

- William Ury, co-author of "Getting To Yes".

  • Each story will force you to see things from an entirely different perspective. A perspective that is nothing short of the truth.
